Students practising Ashtanga Primary Series during a morning class at DivinePath Rishikesh

A 200 hour ashtanga yoga teacher training in Rishikesh is available as a core part of DivinePath’s 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Course. The programme runs for 25 days, covers both Ashtanga and Vinyasa, and is certified through Yoga Alliance (RYS 200, School ID 457520).

I’m Rajesh Ji, Senior Yoga Teacher at DivinePath Yoga School & Retreat. We run campuses in Rishikesh, Goa, and Bali. Our Rishikesh programme isn’t an Ashtanga-only certification. It’s a multi-style 200-hour course where Ashtanga is one of the two main practice streams, alongside Vinyasa. I want to be clear about that upfront, because it changes who this course is right for.

This page covers what you’ll actually study in the Ashtanga component, how the training is structured, what it costs, and what to consider if you’re looking specifically for Ashtanga-focused teacher training.

Study Ashtanga Yoga in Rishikesh

Ashtanga is taught as a daily morning practice throughout the 25-day programme. The practice sessions focus on the Ashtanga Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa), which includes the traditional standing sequence, seated postures, backbends, and the closing sequence. Students learn the Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar A and B) in the Ashtanga tradition and work through the Primary Series progressively over the course.

The course page confirms these Ashtanga elements: Primary Series practice and alignment, cueing for beginners, assisted inversions, and a progressive approach to hip-opening and backbend work over the training period.

Alongside Ashtanga, the programme includes Vinyasa flow planning and teaching, pranayama, meditation, mantra chanting, shatkarma (Jal Neti, Sutra Neti, Trataka, Kapalbhati, Kunjal), anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology, and an introduction to Ayurveda. The course does not include Hatha yoga.

What I can’t confirm from published materials is the exact number of contact hours dedicated to Ashtanga versus Vinyasa, or whether Mysore-style self-practice is part of the training. Those details are available from our admissions team and should be confirmed before you book.

Daily practice

What to Expect from Ashtanga Yoga Training in Rishikesh

Morning asana classes start at 8:30 and run to 10:00. That’s where the Ashtanga practice lives in the daily schedule. The focus is on learning the Primary Series in a structured, teacher-led environment where alignment corrections happen in real time.

For the Ashtanga component specifically, you can expect to work on:

Asana practice of the full Primary Series sequence, taught progressively. Week 1 focuses on foundations. By week 3, students are practising longer sections of the series and beginning to lead portions of the class themselves during teaching practicum sessions.

Breath coordination using Ujjayi pranayama during practice, which is fundamental to Ashtanga methodology. You’ll also study bandhas (energy locks) and drishti (gaze points) as they apply to each posture.

Alignment and adjustment principles specific to Ashtanga postures. The morning session includes hands-on corrections and individual feedback, which is possible because we cap batches at 15 students.

Teaching methodology for cueing Ashtanga postures and sequencing. This is covered in the afternoon teaching practicum block (3:30–5:00 PM), where students practise leading sequences, receive peer and instructor feedback, and build confidence in verbal cueing and physical demonstrations.

One thing to set expectations on: 25 days isn’t enough to master the entire Primary Series. Students who arrive with an existing Ashtanga practice will deepen their understanding significantly. Complete beginners will build a solid foundation in the standing and early seated postures, with exposure to the full series. Graduating doesn’t mean you can teach every posture in the Primary Series from memory — it means you have the training and framework to continue developing your practice and teaching skills.

Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh — Fees and Price

The ashtanga yoga teacher training in Rishikesh price is determined by the 200-hour TTC package you choose. Because Ashtanga is part of the multi-style programme, there isn’t a separate Ashtanga-only fee. The course fee covers the complete 200-hour training including all Ashtanga and Vinyasa sessions.

Ashtanga yoga teacher training in Rishikesh fees — shared and private cottage
Accommodation Course Fee (USD) Deposit (25%)
Shared cottage$950$238
Private cottage$1,300$325

Indian residents: ₹40,000 (shared) or ₹50,000 (private). Contact the admissions team to confirm which currency applies to your passport and payment method.

Book six or more months before your start date and you’ll get 5% off the course fee. That brings the shared cottage to roughly $903 and the private to about $1,235. Early-bird places are limited per batch.

Stay on campus

Accommodation During the Training

Shared cottage room with twin beds and mountain view at DivinePath Rishikesh

The Rishikesh campus is in Tapovan, near Laxman Jhula. Students stay on campus in either shared or private cottages.

Shared cottages have twin beds and an attached bathroom. Private cottages have a double or twin bed and a private bathroom. All rooms have hot water, towels, and housekeeping. Many rooms have balconies.

The campus includes a yoga studio, garden, and swimming pool. Wi-Fi is available. Check-in is at 10 AM on day 1. Check-out is at noon on day 25. If you’re arriving the night before, arrange a guesthouse locally for that first night.

The accommodation is included in the course fee. The only difference between the $950 and $1,300 packages is the room type.

Fit

Who Is This Ashtanga Yoga Training Suitable For?

Students in a closing prayer during Ashtanga yoga training at DivinePath Rishikesh

This programme works well for three kinds of students.

First: people who want a well-rounded yoga teaching foundation that includes Ashtanga. If you’re planning to teach multiple styles, or if you want to understand how Ashtanga fits alongside Vinyasa, pranayama, and philosophy, a multi-style course makes sense. You’ll graduate with broader skills than a single-style programme provides.

Second: practitioners with some Ashtanga experience who want formal training in teaching methodology and anatomy. If you’ve been practising Primary Series on your own or in studio classes and want to understand the why behind the sequence, this course adds the theory, the cueing skills, and the practice-teaching experience that self-study doesn’t give you.

Third: beginners who are drawn to Ashtanga but aren’t sure whether to specialise yet. A multi-style course lets you experience Ashtanga in depth without committing exclusively to it before you’re ready.

Who Should Consider a Different Programme

If you specifically want a Mysore-style, self-practice-focused training, or an authorisation from KPJAYI (the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore), this isn’t the right course. The programme doesn’t offer that specialisation.

If you want to teach advanced Ashtanga sequences (Intermediate Series and beyond) after graduation, a dedicated Ashtanga-only programme with more practice hours would serve you better. Our course covers the Primary Series and foundational teaching skills, not the full Ashtanga system.

If you have zero interest in Vinyasa or multi-style teaching, you’d be paying for curriculum hours that don’t align with your goals. Be honest with yourself about what you need from the training before booking.

Compare carefully

How to Choose the Right Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training

If you’re comparing programmes, a few questions will save you from choosing the wrong one.

Is the course Ashtanga-only or multi-style? Most 200-hour TTCs in Rishikesh are multi-style. That isn’t necessarily worse — it depends on what you want to teach after graduation. An Ashtanga-only course gives deeper practice in the system. A multi-style course gives broader teaching skills.

What’s the actual Ashtanga contact time? A programme that lists Ashtanga in its title but gives it 20 hours out of 200 is teaching it as a module, not as a focus. Ask for the hour breakdown.

Who teaches the Ashtanga sessions? A teacher with direct training in the Ashtanga lineage will deliver a different quality of instruction than someone covering it as one of six styles. Ask about their background.

What’s the batch size? In Ashtanga, individual alignment corrections matter. A class of 30 is a lecture. A class of 15 or fewer is where real teaching happens.

What certification do you get? Most Rishikesh programmes offer a Yoga Alliance RYS 200 certificate for a multi-style 200-hour course. Very few, if any, offer a standalone Ashtanga certification. Make sure you know what your certificate will say.

What’s included in the fee and what isn’t? Compare total cost, not headline price. A $700 course without meals might cost more than a $950 course with everything included.

200-Hour Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh — How We Compare

To give you a concrete sense of how the ashtanga yoga teacher training in Rishikesh cost stacks up, here’s a comparison with other programmes that include Ashtanga in their curriculum. All figures were checked in October 2026 from published course pages or aggregator listings.

Ashtanga yoga teacher training in Rishikesh cost comparison, October 2026
School Duration Styles Shared Room Fee Batch Size Meals Included
DivinePath (Rishikesh) 25 days Ashtanga + Vinyasa $950 15 max Yes — 3/day
Mind Flow Harmony (Rishikesh) 25 days Multi-style (incl. Ashtanga) $1,250 Not listed Yes
BookRetreats average (Rishikesh) 21–28 days Varies (most multi-style) $449–$1,067 Varies Most include meals

A few things to note about this comparison. The BookRetreats range covers dozens of schools, so the low end often reflects early-bird or promotional pricing for basic shared rooms. The $449 listings may not include airport transfer, excursions, or course materials. Check each school’s inclusions line by line.

Our fee of $950 sits in the mid-range. Where it pulls ahead is the all-inclusive structure: meals, accommodation, airport pickup, excursions, and materials are all covered. There’s no surprise bill for textbooks or a separate food charge.

Where we’re not the cheapest option: if you’re on a tight budget and willing to arrange your own meals and accommodation, some schools offer tuition-only packages under $500. That’s a valid approach if you know Rishikesh well or you’re comfortable sorting logistics on arrival.

Why here

Why Study Ashtanga Yoga in Rishikesh?

Ashtanga class by the Ganga with Laxman Jhula in the background, DivinePath Rishikesh

Rishikesh has been a centre for yoga study for decades. That’s not marketing language — it’s a practical fact. The town has a density of yoga schools, experienced teachers, and supporting infrastructure (vegetarian restaurants, ashrams, Sanskrit libraries, Ayurvedic clinics) that you won’t find in most other training locations.

For Ashtanga specifically, Rishikesh isn’t the traditional home — that’s Mysore. But it’s where multi-style programmes have thrived, because students come from 45+ countries wanting a broad education, and the town supports that. You can practise Ashtanga in the morning, study philosophy from a teacher who’s read the Yoga Sutras in Sanskrit, and sit for meditation by the Ganga in the evening. The environment reinforces the training in ways that a studio in London or Los Angeles simply can’t.

Our campus in Tapovan sits on the quieter side of Rishikesh, away from the main market traffic. It’s a 10-minute walk from Laxman Jhula and the river. Students tell us the location makes a real difference — there’s enough separation from the town to stay focused during the intensive, but enough proximity to step out for chai or a bookshop visit on free afternoons.

Policy

Booking, Deposits, and Cancellation

A 25% deposit secures your place: that’s $238 for the shared cottage or $325 for the private. The remaining balance is due before your start date.

Cancellation policy: if you cancel 30 or more days before your course starts, you get a full refund. Cancellations within 30 days of the start date are non-refundable. You can change your start date once, free of charge, as long as you request the change at least 7 days before your original date.

Batches run from the 1st to the 25th of each month. As of October 2026, dates from November 2026 through October 2027 are open. Popular months (October, November, February, March) tend to fill earlier because of the weather — Rishikesh is most comfortable from October to April. Summer months (May–August) are monsoon season, and while the training still runs, expect rain and humidity.
