Ashtanga means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit. The name comes from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, which describe eight interconnected practices that together form the complete yoga path. When most people say “Ashtanga yoga,” they mean the physical practice (asana) systematised by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. But the full system goes far beyond poses.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding style where you perform a set sequence of poses in a specific order, synchronized with your breath. Every movement has a breath count. Every pose has a gazing point. Nothing is random. The sequence is the same every time you practise, which means your body and mind progressively deepen into the same territory rather than jumping between different routines.
This is what separates Ashtanga from Vinyasa flow, where the teacher creates a different sequence each class. In Ashtanga, the sequence is fixed. Your growth happens through repetition, not variety.

Five ethical guidelines: non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), moderation (brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (aparigraha). They shape how you show up as a teacher — whether you push students past their limits, whether you are honest about your qualifications, whether you respect other teachers’ work.
Five personal practices: cleanliness (saucha), contentment (santosha), discipline (tapas), self-study (svadhyaya), and surrender (ishvara pranidhana). In teacher training, Niyama shows up as your daily routine — waking early, studying outside class hours, and being honest about what you do not yet understand.
In the Ashtanga system, asana is a set sequence designed to build heat, flexibility, and internal awareness. We teach the primary series (Yoga Chikitsa) in full during the 200-hour course. You learn every pose, every transition, every breath count.
Ashtanga uses Ujjayi breath — controlled, audible breathing that generates heat and focus. We introduce Ujjayi gradually in Week 1, then add Nadi Shodhana, Kapalabhati, and Bhastrika. You learn not just to practise these techniques but to teach them safely.
Turning attention inward during practice, regardless of external noise. In Arambol this gets tested naturally — birds, distant waves, the occasional motorbike. Learning to focus despite sensory input is part of the training.
Sustained, single-pointed focus. In Ashtanga this is practised through drishti — specific gazing points for each pose. There are nine drishti points. We teach all nine and explain how they stabilise the mind during challenging poses.
When concentration deepens into a continuous flow of awareness. We build capacity gradually — about 10-minute guided sessions in Week 1, progressing toward longer unguided sits by Week 3. Most students find daily Ashtanga makes seated meditation easier.
The state where practitioner, practice, and focus become one. We do not pretend to “teach” samadhi in three weeks. We teach the preceding seven limbs thoroughly, creating conditions for samadhi through years of continued practice. Any school that promises samadhi in a short course is not being honest.
We dedicate roughly 20 hours of the 200-hour curriculum to philosophy, and the eight limbs are the backbone of that teaching. They are not steps on a staircase — they are spokes on a wheel. You practise all of them simultaneously, and they reinforce each other.
Understanding the eight limbs separates a good Ashtanga teacher from a pose demonstrator. When a student asks why they feel emotional after a deep hip opener, you need more than anatomy. The eight-limb framework gives you the philosophical language to explain what is happening at a deeper level.
A controlled, slightly constricted breath with an audible “ocean” sound. It generates internal heat (tapas), keeps rhythmic focus, and signals that practice has begun. We start with natural breath awareness in Week 1 and introduce Ujjayi gradually — never forced on Day 1. Without this breath, Ashtanga becomes just gymnastics.
Each pose has a designated gazing point — nose tip, navel, hand, thumb, side, or between the eyebrows. Drishti directs internal attention. When your eyes are focused, your mind follows. We teach all nine drishti points and practise them in every morning asana session.
Every movement links to an inhale or exhale. There is no “dead time” between poses. Each transition has a breath count. That continuous flow builds cardiovascular endurance and mental focus. Learning the count is challenging at first — by Week 2 most students can move through sun salutations without cueing.
We practise Ashtanga five days a week with two rest days. Traditional Mysore often calls for six; five days gives progression plus recovery during an intensive residential course. By Day 15, poses that felt impossible on Day 2 become accessible — because your nervous system learned to relax into the shape.
The primary series is called Yoga Chikitsa — “yoga therapy.” It is the first of six sequential series in the Ashtanga system and the only series covered in a 200-hour training. The sequence contains approximately 75 poses and takes about 90 minutes once you know the full flow.
It is structured deliberately: sun salutations (Surya Namaskar A and B) heat the body; standing poses build balance and alignment; the seated sequence deepens forward folds, twists, and hip openers; the finishing sequence cools with inversions and restorative poses. Every pose has a therapeutic purpose — detoxify, align the spine, open the hips, strengthen the core. This is a system refined over decades by Pattabhi Jois and passed through a direct lineage of teachers.
At DivinePath we teach the full primary series across the course. By about Day 7 you know sun salutations and standing. By Day 14 you have learned the seated sequence. By graduation you can practise the full primary series from memory and teach it to others.
